EP: Baby Said – Who Gives A Rock

A strong and fascinating four track counting debut EP was released by Baby Said. ‘Who Gives A Rock’ is a slowly building, empowering and passionate collection of alternative rock tracks!

Baby Said was formed by Portsmouth-based duo Veronica and Jess Pal, who’ve got their roots in Italy and Punjab, their musical journey began at a very young age and has grown at an impressive pace. The two have created their signature sound, supported Dirty Honey, and confirmed slots at Reading & Leeds, Victorious Festival and Twisterella to name a few. On their debut piece of work they show what it is that made heads turn and garnered them attention from tastemakers all over the country. With hints of influences taken from early Paramore and Black Honey they’re a band I thoroughly enjoy listening to.

What I enjoy most about their pungent rock sound is the determination and the “less is more” attitude to their music. Soundscape slowly building to expansive crescendos, hooks and rhythms I am still humming along, it all makes for a great impression. They build towards stadium rock track ‘Fight Master’ which is my favourite out of the four. Sharp vocals and a thundering soundscape, a driving chorus and ever-growing confidence make the track a strong closer, and would’ve made for a great opener.

Opening the EP is timid alt rock release ‘Panic Attack’, “‘Panic Attack’ talks about some of the sensations you may feel whilst having a panic attack and describes how a day in the life of someone with anxiety may seem and how it can impact our lives.” They play with the feeling of exhaustion in having created a soundscape that mirrors that feeling, on ‘Mouth Shut’ they tell a story I can thoroughly relate to, “it’s about when you find someone attractive but then they open their mouth and it turns out that they’re not as exciting as they seem, instead they have a really bland personality – you prefer them when they don’t talk.” It’s the way they tell their stories and share the inspiration behind the stories that make me giggle and want to sit down and have a coffee with this, quite comical, duo.

So aside from their captivating rock rhythms, they’re also an intriguing pair, which truly doesn’t happen as often as you think within the modern musical landscape… Baby Said are now on my Ones to Watch-list!
