Live: Day 1 of Coastella did not disappoint!

This year is the first year we see brand new coastal music festival Coastella take place on a rugby field in North Shields, the organisers booked acts of all shapes and sizes to perform across two days and we went to discover some of our new favourites!

The festival field is a big square where you can find the main stage, a bar, food and toilets. The second stage can be found in a white tent and there’s a double decker bus where people can go to head some of their favourite songs performed by local troubadours.

The atmosphere is good, the wind trying its best to blow us all away but luckily the artists are better at that! First on when we arrive is soul pop artist Frankie Jobling who instantly mesmerises with her powerful stage presence and fantastic band. Next on is indie rock band Bear Park who give us a tight performance of bouncing indie tunes.

We then move into the second stage, partly to shelter from the wind, and are blown away by upbeat indie rock outfit Dayzies who play like there is no tomorrow. They bring the riffs, the energy and the bops, despite their hangover! Next up we get offered a captivating cool down by folk pop artist Elizabeth Liddle who brings beautifully fragile songs with the voice of an angel.

Those paying attention will notice that the next artist plays with the exact same band as Liddle, Emma Robson, who we have caught a few times before af Sofar Sounds and Mosaic Tap, plays confidently and with a full backing band, which suits her very well! We simply have to sing along to her brand new single ‘Hairline Fracture’ and an older one, ‘Bad Tattoos’. We end our day with Sofar Sounds alumni Mat Hunsley, and This Little Bird.

The dark and warm voice of Hunsley will always be mesmerising, and This Little Bird’s is a soft and feminine, comforting and relaxing one. These were our highlights of Coastella day one and for a first edition the festival organisers have certainly done a banging job!
