For the emotionally fragile, Gemma Hayes wrote a song of support and comfort. ‘High & Low’ is beautifully intricate, with soft vocals and a soundscape that is subtle and inartificial. Her voice nearly whispering the lyrics, ‘High & Low’ requires its listener to sit down and listen, put away your phone, turn off your notifications, immerse yourself.
‘High & Low’ is Hayes’ first release in nine years, and combines her hushed vocals with delicate and atmospheric strings. The single sounds like a homecoming and was co-produced with David Odlum (The Frames). ‘High & Low’ is about the quest for connection. “It’s about feeling disconnected – but desperately wanting to connect. In the song, this idea is placed in the context of grief and longing for a person who is gone, leaving a ghostly feeling of not fully being alive because of their departure.”
This new release feels like a warm blanket, translates feelings we’ve had and doubted into something we can understand and wrap ourselves into. We’re glad Gemma Hayes has returned, about her hiatus she said: “It means so much to me to be releasing new music this year. Whilst I never stopped creating during my ‘hiatus’, I did indeed step back from sharing what I created simply because of the little humans that needed me to keep them alive for the first few years of their lives.”
