I simply longed for a break of fast paced, angry and screaming punk tracks, and during that search I stumbled upon The Dumbanimals. The band just released their ten track album ‘Thrift Pop’, which is a steadily driving collection of alternative pop tracks, and it’s refreshing as that sounds.
All songs on ‘Thrift Pop’ were written by Len Kenyon, who also sings lead vocals and plays drums on these tracks, the album was recorded in Vermont and produced and mixed by Ben Arrindell (Busta Rhymes, Janet Jackson). The album is a clearly well-produced and chaotically organised collection of songs, with hints at surf rock and alternative pop. A favourite is the fast paced yet unhurried ‘Lollygagger’, it is those confident and laid back vocals that make the album a sweet and infectious, warm one.
We hear a few filthy riffs on ‘Doorknob’, and a dream pop vibe on ‘Aim Lame (Call Me Crazy)’. We enjoyed ‘Scribble’s hazy electro pop intro and the distorted riffs on ‘Futz’. The album smells of an influence taken from Foo Fighters, and a poeticness a la Kurt Vile. A favourite is the soft and hazy ‘In My Car’, which is close to closing the album with a soft and pensive sound with sharp vocals in its midst! Inspiration and influences taken from many different artists, genres, and sides of life, The Dumbanimals have created a refined palette of music and created a masterpiece with ‘Thrift Pop’.
