We have learned from the likes of Royal Blood that an act doesn’t need to consist of more than two people to give an astonishingly energetic performance, and Middlesbrough’s Mascara’s Lies confirm that is very much the case. The young duo give it their all from the get-go, being fired up by an eager audience. Bobiks is already filled with a decent amount of music fanatics that just can’t wait to start their moshpit.
Mascara’s Lies bring an eclectic blend of punk and alt rock with catchy drum rolls being their strength. Their young vocals leave room for improvement but their energy and beaming smiles make sure no one else in the room really notices. The music stands, a cover of Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Boots’ shows the duo’s ability to sway even those that are not a fan of the original, and they are the perfect opener for the evening!

Even though I am not a fan of theatrical gestures, when a band enters the stage with an intro track, that instantly gets me in the right mood. Carsick waste no time nor does their audience, from the very first minute they enter the stage, the energy levels are nearly visibly vibrating throughout the venue. The four-piece are clearly well coordinated and predict each other’s every move. The two brothers in the front are very much in tune with each other and by jumping into the audience multiple times – mastering cordless gear is a must when playing with Carsick – they build an unbreakable bond with their audience.
A mosh pit is kicking off from the very first song and does not end until the band leave the stage. I do at some point wonder how much longer the floor’s venue will hold… But the anticipation and enthusiasm of their set and songs is undeniably infectious and nearly (I said nearly!) sees me jumping into the respectful yet chaotic bundle of limbs that bounces about the venue. The band plays ‘Is What It Is’ and ‘Nothing To Do’, ‘Runner’ and ‘Muzzle’, and with that give me the songs I recognise from the young emerging rock band. They work the stage for a good amount of time yet it still feels like time was sped up whilst they were up there, and I’m still craving for more…
