Album: The Links – Outside

Nine songs make up the work of art The Links created, ‘Outside’ is their psychedelic guitar-infused surf rock sound and the solution for fans of Deftones, Tame Impala and Radiohead. These eccentric soundscapes are of a refreshing kind and slowly build towards exciting summits. We hear distorted and rambling alien-esque soundscapes and grand, rolling drums on ‘Calice’. Intriguing and strong, soaring, passionate vocals, bring this song together and to a high.

Their fifth full length is built on influences taken from some of the rock greats, with hints at shoegaze-y effects, and out-of-this-world vibes. Theirs is a feral sound, loud and energetic and refreshingly angry, which we hear on ‘Excess’, while ‘Dive’ and ‘Contradiction’ slow the album down and hint at a more surf pop-inspired inspiration. Beautiful vocals stand at their midst, with a rough edge, shaped like diamond, The Links truly showcase the whole of their musical vocabulairy on ‘Outside’!

A favourite might be the album’s psychedelic rock closer ‘Aspartame’, which forces us to listen to the music in a very different and more present way. The song’s building blocks are many, of which we had never heard of any before, and it makes the song and the band’s ability to create incredible soundscapes stand out even more. ‘Outside’ is a fantastic cumulation of sounds and spheres and brings a new dynamic to our musical preferences, as well as our blog!
