Favourites: Elizabeth Liddle, Lewis McLaughlin and néomí

Elizabeth Liddle – What I Wouldn’t Do

Beautifully intricate alternative pop comes from North East-based songstress Elizabeth Liddle. Her latest is called ‘What I Wouldn’t Do’ and is a wonderfully introspective poetic pop song. The song follows the released of her debut EP ‘Somewhere’ and two successful single releases, the new one breaks the genre boundaries and builds on an orchestral soul pop sound with an old fashioned touch.

‘What I Wouldn’t Do’ sounds like a hazy Sunday afternoon in autumn, and captivates from the get-go. Heartfelt lyrics talk about personal insecurities within a relationship and ultimately the acceptance of its ending…

Lewis McLaughlin – Getting Better

Scottish singer songwriter Lewis McLaughlin landed on our radar through a Sofar Sounds show in Newcastle in spring, and he’s not been off our mind since. His latest is ‘Getting Better’, and its a soft and slowly building indie pop song with his warm voice in its midst. It is a subtle sound that demands careful listening, ‘Getting Better’ builds on a cinematic soundscape that grows on us throughout the track. It’s an indie anthem in waiting, upbeat and with a feel-good taste.

Written in Glasgow, Lewis compelled himself to believe in a more positive future, during the depths of a dark winter. The song can be heard in many ways, but surely brings a hopeful and comforting touch to our playlists!

néomí – your girl

She’s not disappointed so far and ever since she’s landed on the scene has only been building and growing stronger as well as more confident in her own sound. néomí’s latest alternative pop song is a sonically colourful and beautifully driving one, ‘your girl’ makes her voice shine bright and showcases a sound and band that is determined and ready to conquer the world.

On ‘your girl’ she’s adopted a more euphoric dream pop sound that sees her step away from the soft acoustic-led direction she was about to head in. néomí is building towards the release of her long-awaited debut album which will see the light of day in 2024, and on ‘your girl’ we hear a snippet of her future direction.

“For the first time I’ve started to write music not from a place of sadness, but a place of anger. ‘your girl’ is about people painting a picture ‘you’ using their own words, their stories, their interpretation of who they think you are today… You lose yourself to another ‘you’ and become another character because of that. I noticed I was playing up to a character of how others around me saw me and had to work very hard to find myself again.
