Oliver James Brooks – Technologically Stoned

Toronto-based singer songwriter Oliver James Brooks writes eclectically poppy, intriguing songs with a mysterious twist. ‘Technologically Stoned’ isn’t as straight-forward as its title might presume, it is a soft alternative pop sound entwined with influences from shoegaze and rock. Brooks’ strong and warm vocals shine through strongest on his latest release, also the first of his upcoming studio album. ‘In A Little Long While’ will appear on the 24th of November, taster ‘Technologically Stoned’ is available to stream and watch everywhere now.

The riff-driven alternative folk track is inspired by the growing dependency on technology, “and what that does to the general public in daily life and social settings.” With the artist living in a large city, he takes advantage of public transport to get about, “and it’s become increasingly difficult to not notice how the majority of people are stuck staring down at their phones.” He tells this story in a The National-like manner with a hint of Alex Turner-sway. “I make a conscious effort to never look down at my phone while on transit, but if you choose to, I hope it’s because you’re watching the music video that goes along with this song.”
