Live: Squid’s mesmerising sonic soundscapes at Newcastle’s Boiler Shop

Local soundscape artist Me Lost Me is due to open tonight’s event at Boiler Shop for fantastic eclectic rock outfit Squid, sadly we’re unable to catch her set but we’ve witnessed it before and know she’s worth the listen! Next up is Blue Bendy, a genre-bending group of introverted musicians that bring wavy and eclectic soundscapes. Their stage presence isn’t entirely there since three fourth of the band is situated on one side of the stage with a lonely musician on the other side. They are young and clearly growing into their music and it’s a pleasant sight to see. Undeniably a perfect opener for Squid!

This South-London band landed on our radar with the release of single ‘The Dial’ and have since grown their repertoire and enhanced their sound into something completely their own. Psychedelic rock vibes, instruments from all over the world and five talented musicians rake over the stage and the entire venue with their sonic soundscapes. With every Squid gig we attend we discover a new musical element and we are always fully enchanted from the beginning until the very end. The band makes sure no silences fall in-between their songs and their eclectic rhythms and musical compositions sometimes make us wonder if one song has ended and another has started… Or not.

The entire night their relationship with their audience is one of unity, it is as if there is no barrier between band and audience, we are making music together. Their audience, now that we’re talking about it, is nearly as eclectic as their sound with some completely transfixed teenagers at the front and right behind them their parents going batshit crazy and starting mosh pits. Tonight’s event shows that they should always be done safely, or people will get hurt.

Squid has been crafting for years and have developed themselves into a band hard to miss on the live circuit. We do nowadays have to be in a very specific mood to be able to sit through a recorded Squid-album, but seeing the band live will never bore us. Their passion shines through in each and everyone of them, shows on their faces, in their smiles, and funky dance moves. When it seems they are just hitting their instruments our ears tell us it is all part of the music and an unmissable movement despite appearances. The night is eventful in many ways and Boiler Shop’s rather large stage suits this ever growing band very well, yet we hope they won’t go much bigger because a Squid arena-gig would have a much different atmosphere! So really, we would like to keep them to ourselves a little bit longer…
