A beautifully pensive album was released by artist Russ Poole, ‘So Much More’ is his debut album and it is a comforting one at that! The album was recorded in his home studio, and mixed and mastered by Greg Wilson-Copp at Sound Shack Studios.
The opener of this debut album is the softly spoken, warm and eclectic ‘Switch Off’, on the song we hear the success formula Russ Poole has found and refined. Beautifully warm vocals and a singular soundscape make for a simplistic yet colourful soundscape. We keep hearing this soft folk pop sound throughout the album with hints of indie pop on title track ‘So Much More’ and single ‘Alive’. Careful positivity is what we hear on most of the tracks on the album, a spoken and story telling tyle of singing make us hone in on its lyrics. Russ Poole is a poet, a story teller most of all. His songs are subtly dressed in rich guitar sounds, which is most adamant on ‘Stories’, which confirms our previously made statement.
By track number six we are starting to long for something a little more energetic, slightly more changing and a little less heavy-hearted, but ‘What You Want’ shines an even brighter light on his soft and strong vocals which make this another heart-felt and empowering track and makes us forget about the want for an upbeat soundscape. ‘Happy’ gives us the more light-hearted sound we were looking for, we return to some more heavy-heartedness with ‘Lost’ and ‘Just One More’. The closer of the album is single ‘Loud’, on which we hear gorgeous crooning vocals, heavier than on the rest of the album, and despite its soundscape still being a slow paced one, its vocals make up for all of that as they are mesmerising and beautifully mahogany sounding… The last song on Russ Poole’s debut album might just be our favourite, so when you’re listening to ‘So Much More’, make sure to stick around until the end!
