In conversation with Megan Black

Award-winning singer songwriter and artist Megan Black just released her unapologetic new EP ‘Full Circle Part 1’. The EP is a cumulation of empowering rock anthems and brings a new sound and energy to the scene. The Scottish artist writes from a place of anger and frustration at the world and her surroundings which resulted in four thumping bluesy rock songs!

In a world that craves authentic voices and meaningful messages, Megan Black stands at the forefront. A perfect example of the meaningful messages she shares is her anthemic release ‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER’, it set the tone for what’s to come. The song is an inspirational anthem that celebrates the spirit of womanhood and the strength in sticking together. On the songwriting process, she explained: “We’re taught from a very young age that women should compete with one another. I wanted to use this song to spread the message that we don’t need to fight against each other.” In the song she cries out for unity in a comforting way, urging those hiding in the shadows to come out and step into their power.

Each track on the EP represents a chapter of an overarching project, the EP is just the beginning of a deeply personal journey that unveils the highs and lows of Megan’s experiences. She tirelessly challenges societal norms and creates an inclusive space while doing so. ‘Just For Fun’ is a punchy and driving rock track with rolling drums and her incredible vocals at the forefront. The song touches on the subject of struggling with self-destructive tendencies, she sings: “I find comfort in my own pain”. This song is honest and eruptive and seamlessly gets followed by ‘Fuck You (You Stole My Youth)’. Talking about punchy, this one is the perfect example of a song that hits you in the gut, doesn’t beat around the bush and demands the attention it deserves. ‘Fuck You’ incorporates rap into its rocking sound and lends a most powerful voice to victims of sexual assault. “I wrote it to raise awareness and hopefully help people who feel trapped in so much anger and trauma. We need to open the conversation.” She is an incredible songwriter who writes from personal experiences and deals with those experiences in her own unique and inspiring way.

‘Me Vs Mother Nature’ wraps up the EP, and is no less powerful than any of the other songs on ‘Full Circle Part 1’. The track is an urgent call to address our environmental concerns collectively, a song that came about after she was asked to write about “the birds and the bees” while she usually finds inspiration in anger. The song came about when she went for a walk and found herself surrounded by nature, she has also previously supported Greenpeace through her music and deeply understands the need to take action. ‘Me Vs Mother Nature’ stands as a reminder that our fears over the plant are real and valid. Of the song, Megan said: “It’s about bringing people together over something so daunting. We all share this experience.” The, in our opinion, most powerful lyrics on this EP can be found on ‘Me Vs Mother Nature’, “we can never bloom the way you do”… She ends the song and her EP with the chant “we’re all holding onto something greater, onto something better”

Megan’s unique storytelling truly comes together on this EP, a perfect example of powerful songwriting and coming from a place of honesty, open-heartedness and concern… Whereabouts are we headed and what is it that we are doing, and what for? Megan Black demands answers, action, a solution, and this EP seems to only be the beginning, because she has so much more to say. Her live performance is just as exhilarating as her recorded music, as we experienced ourselves at July’s Sofar Sounds session in Newcastle and her headline show at Newcastle’s Mosaic Tap. The EP and her music weave a compelling narrative that explores the delicate balance between hope and fear in her life. Her powerful and empowering messages are infused with influences from 70’s blues and rock drenched in the fiery essence of queer pop. She delves into the subject of finding herself and her place in this world and does it with grace and a smile on her face. She is a force, a talented creator who creates out of necessity, because she could in no way stay silent about the things she is passionate about. She was tipped as an artist to watch in 2023 and with ‘Full Circle Part 1’ proved to be worthy of that title, as well of the awards she has won in L.A. and San Francisco. This is only the beginning, and Megan Black is asking you if you are ready to join the ride, are you?
