North East-based alternative pop artist Nadedja mesmerised us with a stripped back set at music festival Lindisfarne and we have been keeping an eye on her since. She recently released a song in her mother tongue, Portuguese, and is performing an intimate headline show at The Cumberland Arms on the 23rd of November! Times for us to ask her some questions.
Hi! Who are you and who inspires you to make music?
Hi! I’m Nadedja, an artist from Brazil, who’s been kindly adopted by the North-East of England. I’m a songwriter and indie pop musician. When I’m not doing music, I’m most likely walking my sweet dog, Lilo, going to yoga classes or practicing photography. My greatest music inspirations are Maggie Rogers, Rosalía, and most recently, Santigold.
What kind of music is it that you make and how do you write your songs?
I’m not a big fan of defining things by genre, but the closest to my sound is probably indie pop or alt pop. I think of my music as songs to cry and dance to – love the drama, very Latina of me. My writing style is very focused on lyrics, big feelings and telling real, heartfelt stories. The songs always come from a place of truth in my life.
What do you do next to being an artist?
I’m part of a beautiful organisation called We Make Culture, we deliver amazing music-making projects around the city of Sunderland, to groups that otherwise wouldn’t have easy access to cultural activities. I’m very proud to be their Project Coordinator.
If you could give your ten year old self a tip on life and working in music, what would it be?
Top tip girl: your worth and success is completely yours to define. Also, life is for joy, curiosity, and creativity, so stay true to yourself and go explore.
When is your next live event?
Very excited to be playing with my band at The Cumberland Arms on the 23rd November, alongside the wonderful Black Moss and dreamy Izzy Price. Expect lots of sad bops, alt pop and very cute merch – please come join us for all the fun!
What is happening or do you hope will be happening for you and your band in 2024?
Ooooh, 2024, I’m excited for you! New music is definitely on its way – I’ve been working very hard on a new project, these songs mean the world to me and I can hardly wait to perform them live with the boys! But for now, I’ve been taking my time to get them ready, the band and I will start collaborating (arrangements-wise) in this new era too, so all very exciting!
