What else would we do on a Sunday evening but to go and see some live music? Exactly, nothing. We travelled down to Sunderland’s The Peacock where we got up close and personal with Amelia Coburn and Tom Robinson.
The young folk pop singer opened the evening with her gorgeously angelic voice and beautiful story telling songs. Coburn performed a short set of personal songs and captivated her audience like no other. They were keen to interact, sing, and sway along which brought a wonderfully welcome atmosphere to the venue and the evening. She brought an ode to Dublin, and one to Bowie with a cover of ‘Life On Mars?’ which hit the sweet spot with her audience, and brand new fans.
Tom Robinson has brought the people of Sunderland together for an evening of heartfelt protest songs and to share his life’s story. The 73-year old legendary musician doesn’t beat around the bush and dismantles societal norms, the way we look at the police and believe all that the newspapers print in simple songs that are just “too bloody catchy”! We sung about brotherly love on ‘Martin’, dedicated ‘Too Good To Be True’ to late Tom Robinson-band member Danny, and ‘Warbaby’ gave us the goosebumps.
The venue was filled with a crowd knowing every single word to all of his songs and the venues was buzzing with anticipation every time Robinson started a new song. The warm and passionate crowd never once made us feel like we were “too young for his music” and had us leave beaming with a smile from ear to ear by the end of the night. When Tom Robinson returns to the north east, we’ll be there again!
