January might seem a dreary month, but from Wednesday the 17th of January until Saturday the 20th of January the north of the Netherlands turns into a musical mayhem during Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen. A music festival and network event a la The Great Escape is always one to highlight and never one to miss. With the entire city roaring in anticipation, and live music coming from every single corner of its streets, we thought we’d highlight our favourite venues to go to during the festival!
Groningen’s popular live music venue VERA is, of course, hosting a series of events during Eurosonic Noorderslag with sets from rock band Annie Taylor, fuzz rock outfit Izzy and the Black Trees, and rock foursome Fat Dog, happening across four days. On Saturday legendary showcase Jagersonic will be holding house at VERA, we truly can’t wait to see what experiences will unfold…
Groningen’s record store Plato will be hosting a fantastic line-up during their very own Platosonic. With Dutch emerging artists such as néomí, Belgium’s Loupe, and Melin Melyn performing on Thursday, English Teacher and Dutch sensation Froukje on Friday, and our brand new obsession Hiqpy performing on Saturday, the record store is going to be bursting at the seams and free to enter for anyone with or without a ticket to the festival!
De Drie Gezusters is a grand café and massive maze with multiple stages you could easily get lost in, while entertaining yourself the entirety of ESNS. Pinguin Radio is hosting their Penguin Showcases and Gentlemen Recordings are hosting their showcase at De Gezusters on Friday the 20th of January with four incredible musicians from over and across the pond. Entry to De Drie Gezusters is also free!
On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Het Concerthuis is hosting their showcase Grunnsonic, with a mix of pop, rock, jazz, and hip hop acts all gracing the stage at the bar that is located just off Groningen’s Grote Markt! Easy access, with some wonderful drinks on tap, delicious bites to eat and free to get into, are you sold already?
