There is no day like a Sunday to discover new indie artists and today’s dauntingly beautiful discovery is Kiwi indie folk artist Cam Wilson who just released his debut EP ‘The Time’. He’s a DIY artist, creating his compelling and sincere folk pop songs without help from big producers, marketing teams and many resources.
To have a team behind yourself as an artist might at times work to your advantage, but when you’re able to create without input from non-musicians, potentially looking at you as if you’re a product instead of a person, they can only hinder the creative process. It’s clear Cam has been able to get to a thrilling end product without the help from big names within the industry. His songs are – still – honest and raw and driven by soft guitar tones and his wide vocal range in their midst.
Simple and thriving, his songs are soothing and shine a refreshing light on the folk pop genre. Most soaring single of his debut EP is single ‘Forever Dreaming’, with an angelic and sonic soundscape supporting his powerful voice. A rhythm softly thumping and lifting the song to a higher level, ‘Forever Dreaming’ stands out from the others. After a sweet interlude, Wilson ends his EP with a subtly uplifting note on ‘Best of It’. If you’re a fan of Ben Howard and Bon Iver, Cam Wilson will be right up your street. Throw in a bit of Tom Odell’s sultriness, and you have the perfect mix of influences making for an exciting sound and EP!
In Cam’s own words, “This EP is about how you reflect on yourself as you grow older. It is about the anxiety of your own expectations, nostalgia and reflection, and the gradual transition from youth. These songs have developed since my early twenties until recently, when I recorded around the time of my 28th birthday. I realised that I wanted to collect and share these songs as a mutual concept before I move on to new themes. They’re melancholic, but ultimately optimistic and positive.”
