EP: Pieternel – Acoustic Tales

We love an acoustic tale, and especially when it is told and song by Dutch singer songwriter and musician Pieternel. Her latest EP is a cumulation of ‘Acoustic Tales’ and was released earlier this month. The EP is made up of five beautifully emotive and fragile yet powerful acoustic versions of previously released songs.

Her voice shines bright on these simple and stripped back versions of her soft Americana slash folk pop songs. The songs come from her previously released album ‘Underneath this Skin’, which exposes the thoughts of a women in search of her place in a world that never stops spinning. The acoustic versions of these songs lay bare a vulnerability not often seen in a modern landscape that pretends to care about emotions but truly wants you to hide them and make sure no one realises you are also only just human.

Pieternel shares a soft human touch on songs such as ‘Standing On The Edge’ and ‘Ugly Beast’. With simple guitar play and a beautiful, theatrical voice thinking aloud, the songs on ‘Acoustic Tales’ showcase how simply mesmerising music can be. Pieternel recorded her EP with guitarist and producer Bram Doreleijers, together they stripped the songs down to their core, creating a new world with acoustic string instruments and harmonised vocals only.

The closer and leading track of the EP was co-written with Stephanie Struijk, ‘Promise of a Postcard’, most soaring and potentially our favourite out of these five tracks. It is a wandering and colourful release, beautifully and thoughtfully composed, Pieternel might shine brightest in acoustic form… We’ll let you judge for yourself!
