Introducing the Industry: hmv Newcastle

Here’s a brand new interview series in which we introduce the industry to you, from Scotland to the south of England, across the border through the Netherlands, and Germany. First up is hmv Newcastle supervisor Ritch, learn more about him and the business below!

What is your role at hmv Newcastle, and what do you do besides working at hmv?

I’m a supervisor at hmv and also plan, organise and promote all the in-store events especially the Live & Local activities. Besides hmv, I can usually be found at a gig or two every week, the cinema or the best role of all, being a dad to my daughter.

When did you start working in the role you’re in now and what inspires you to keep going?

I’ve worked for hmv since July 1999 and played a part in the events for a long time. When #hmvLiveAndLocal began in 2019 I jumped at the chance to run things.

A great source of inspiration has been working with the local artists. When hmv launched its own record label (1921 Records) one of my own nominations was chosen, India Arkin. Since then I’ve been even more eager to continuing helping artists where I can.

What do you think of as the strengths of your local music scene?

We have such a wonderful community that takes care of each other. GIGCO is essential for the scene and is growing all the time. Ben and Matt have such passion and it’s great getting to work with them. Promoters such as Shin Gigs along with us having so many venues around for people to perform. You really could go to a gig every night of the week. I’ve made some amazing friends through the music scene too!

Who are your top three favourite emerging artists within the wider region?

Oh that’s a tough one, there’s so much talent out there! Finn Forster, this lad from Middlesborough impresses more and more every time I see him and when he releases material. One of the best vocalists I’ve ever heard, a really tight band, just phenomenal.

Liam Fender has such a unique sound compared to the majority of artists around. Great song writing, absolutely wonderful bloke and I love seeing him perform live. The Peevie Wonders, speaking of unique. They’re talented, quirky, and hard working. They’ve mastered writing catchy songs and you can’t help but smile when you hear them. Anyone with a love of Irn Bru is good with me. Honourable mentions to Dayzies, Hannah Robinson, Camel Island, Headcage, Decrepit Youths, Ten Eighty Trees, Vice Killer, Tearjerker, Wolfred, and Jango Flash.

Where and when do you discover your new favourite artists?

Nick Roberts and his old BBC Introducing Show and Off The Stage podcast have been invaluable to find new artists. I also try to make it to as many gigs as possible and will always get there early to see support acts. It’s a great way to find new favourites. Sofar Sounds is brilliant for finding new bands too, I discovered a band called Wolfred through Sofar. They are a massive favourite at the moment and I saw them recently at The Cluny.

When are your next live events taking place? Either organised by yourself, or events you’re attending?

We have #hmvLiveAndLocal performances almost every Saturday afternoon and advertise them on our socials and with the GIGCO app. Outside of hmv my next planned gigs are Finn Forster at The Glass House, Jango Flash at The Grove, and then we have Wolfred in the store! What a three day run that’ll be!
