‘Rust & Blue’ is London-based soul pop artist Marie Naffah‘s latest release, with the song she shows that ‘Gabriel’ wasn’t just a one hit wonder. Her dark and warm voice stands out from any crowd, and on ‘Rust & Blue’ she once again hits the spot with a mesmerising and soaring alt pop sound.
She is a captivating artist and had us hooked from the very first single we heard of her, her natural gift for storytelling and creating beautifully theatrical sound hasn’t gone unnoticed. She’s created a signature sound combining moments of modernity and nostalgia, blending influences from lyricists such as Bob Dylan and The Beatles, and artists such as Sharon Van Etten and Big Thief.
‘Rust & Blue’ is another mesmerising piece of soulful alternative pop, slowly building towards a carefully enthusiastic chorus. Its build up is slow and steady, holding on to our attention from its first tones until its very last ones. Marie is at the point in her musical career during which she creates her most authentic music to date, “we challenged ourselves and spent a lot of time trying to make a sound that feels uniquely mine. I took my reference playlist to Robin, and instead of pushing me into a genre, he said “yeah, we can do this”, and we did.”
She does not pretend nor try to fit in, but instead is working on standing out, answering a wish many didn’t know they’d wished for. “I wanted to write an easy-feel love song whilst avoiding all lyrical cliché. A song with the refrain ‘I love how you know I hate that’ showcases a familiar, fun love.” And what she was looking to achieve, she achieved. Her music is easy to love and to adore, and ‘Rust & Blue’ is the most charming song we have heard in a while.
