Video: Bess Atwell – Release Myself

A beautifully pensive new alt pop song was released by one of our favourite artists; Bess Atwell. ‘Release Myself’ is a soft and warm, shimmering pop single lead by her angelic voice. The song comes with the announcement of a new album, ‘Light Sleeper’, which was produced by The National’s Aaron Dressner and will be out on the 24th of May on Real Kind Records.

‘Release Myself’ comes with an artistic music video showing Atwell singing, accentuated by sunrays alternated by scenes of spring. The video is one of not many perfectly suitable for the music accompanying its visuals. Showing slow frames, unhurried scenes romanticising live by warm vintage colour schemes.

The collaboration between Atwell and Dressner has clearly paid off and has brought an almost oasis-like sound that is almost too mesmerising to be true. Warm tones support her vibrant voice and bring this subtle soundscape to life. The upcoming album looks to continue on this warm and effervescent aesthetic, and it sounds Bess well. About ‘Release Myself’ she said, “There are always a couple of songs on a record that just sort of fall out of you and this was one of them. This was the first time I’ve managed to write about my panic disorder without slipping too far into sorry-for-myself or cheesy, faux-empowering territory. It’s a song that says “hey I’m struggling but I’m not a victim”.
