Vibrant alternative pop artist Nina June explores herself as an ever evolving artist and woman on her brand new collection of songs, ‘Paradigm’.
The EP is a colourful and subtly captivating gathering of storytelling pop songs that all have their own character yet blend in incredibly well together. ‘Your Surrender’ is the sparkling opening of the EP and introduces her beautiful voice which leads us through this work of art like a red thread. On ‘Wish You Well’ we are surprised by pleasantly soft vocal harmonies that add a layer to this song and lift the song’s spirits without losing its soft and subtle integrity.

On ‘Paradigm’, Nina June said: “This is a different phase in my life, I’ve developed as a woman, so I’ve developed as an artist too. I feel very at peace with my music and also, maybe, with myself as a storyteller. All of the noise is gone. I’ve become more mature, and I’ve added more layers to who I am as a writer, a performer, and a person.” The absence of noise is adamant on ‘Paradigm’, and makes it a confident and memorable piece of work, still echoing in our heads after having finished playing.
Its title track plays on a warm and almost theatrical intro and soundscape, with the addition of keys, and storytelling vocals that make us want to listen and capture every word and tone. While pregnant with her son, she chose a different approach for the creation of this EP. This time around, she collaborated with a handful of artists who she respected. “I tried to tune into the musical landscapes of my collaborators. After my son was born, there was another new dynamic as well. For the first time, I was craving a moment to myself, and I wrote some songs on my own too. The whole process was unique and inspiring for me.”
Her work is just as inspiring to us, and we could just imagine a theatre piece driven by her emotive sounds, and a dancer bringing her songs to life with a contemporary choreography. For ‘Moon Over The Sun’ she worked together with Joshua Hyslop and together they bring a warm and understated melody that exudes calm as the realisation of impending love descends. She makes her closing statement with ‘Savannah’, which holds a special significance for Nina. It is a more uplifting, light-hearted sound with shimmering layers of guitar, in which the protagonist sings to the woman who stole her lover and, invariably, altered the course of her life. It is a powerful conclusion of the EP that we have truly embraced, we are excited to hear more from Nina June.
