Canadian alt rock group Vogue Villains just released their new album ‘Built On Bones’ and they show they’re not faffing about! The album opens with instantly punching single ‘A Slow Ride (At The Speed Of Light)’ and continues to mesmerise throughout its 12 tracks.
Delicious guitar licks and dark but powerful soundscapes take us on a journey of energetic alternative rock and the result of the pandemic. As soon as their live shows were cancelled, they shifted into gear and started writing and demoing all the material they had on the back burner. One of our favourites is title track ‘Built On Bones’ which bears a canny resembles to the deliciously ferocious sound and voice of Queens Of The Stone Ages’ Josh Homme. They truly honed in on their signature sound and perfected it, taking inspiration from some of our favourite artists.
“A recurring theme for us on this album is coming to terms with the necessary dismantling, analysis and reconstruction of our lives from atop the bones of our past.” says lead vocalist / bassist Andrew Baskin. “In a lot of ways, this album is about accountability, whether in ourselves or in others. It’s about realizing that it’s time to get your shit together, change now or forever hold your peace, because like it or not, you may just be the villain of your own story. This is where we knock it all down. It’s time to rebuild.”
They bring us the building blocks of rock on ‘Wrong Side Of Midnight’ which is a thunderous track shining an equal spotlight on soaring vocals and a driving soundscape, which is what we hear on most of the tracks on the album. We hear themes of darkness, lyrical references to vampires are made on ‘Long Live Immortality!’, ‘Bleed’ and ‘Tastes Like Sin’, and some of its tracks play with hints of indie and alternative pop. We were about to mention another favourite but realised that ‘Built On Bones’ is made up of brand new favourites, with closing chapter ‘Only Human’ being another softly thumping and undeniably catchy track we could easily listen to on repeat. Which is exactly what we’ll do, ‘Built On Bones’ is made to be played on repeat, and who are we to go against the grain?!
