EP: Winona Oak – Void

A dauntingly beautiful new alternative pop EP was released by Winona Oak. Her collection of songs is called ‘Void’ and it’s a mesmerising piece of soft and wandering sounds that are driven by gorgeous vocals and subtle soundscapes.

We’re a fan of vocal harmonies and get a good portion on single ‘Fire Escapes’, which is the second on ‘Void’. The six track counting EP is well-crafted and sounds like a subtly angelic haze of warm pop sounds that guide us through a grey Sunday afternoon. She brings colour to this grey weather palette and boosts our mood.

Elaborate and meticulously produced soundscapes bring us this soft, hazy, and captivating sound delivered by Winona Oak. ‘If I Were To Die’ is the perfect example of that well-produced sound by the Swedish artist. She is every bit as enchanting as her origin story, with a childhood spent encountering more animals than people, she grew up a trained horse acrobat and pursued creative expression however she could.

She collaborated with What So Not, The Chainsmokers, and many others in the run up to the release of her new EP and about her latest project said: “Last year was by far the worst year of my life. When my mom passed away, I lost a part of myself that I will never get back. I’ve never felt so empty, so far from the person that I used to be. Living with grief is like learning how to live with half a heart. This EP was created in the middle of the chaos, with a void inside my chest. All the lyrics are raw and unfiltered, there’s parts of me in these songs that will tell you more about me than I could ever explain.”

Despite the heart-wrenching message behind the EP, Winona still knows how to make it sound that bit uplifting, comforting. ‘Inside Out’, a collaboration with Boy In Space, is a good example of sounding uplifting yet being rooted in loss and having lost oneself. The soft and shimmering intro of the track makes it a pleasant listen, yet shows how a first listen doesn’t always showcase what is truly inside… Listen to ‘Void’ below!
