Dortmund-based project Present Paradox is the musical moniker of David Kleinekottmann who recently released his album ‘A Trace To Keep Control’. It is a twelve-track album of experimental rock and slowly building soundscapes.
Soft and warm, comforting vocals introduce us to ‘A Trace To Keep Control’, it is a theatrical and grand alt rock sound which is what we hear a lot from throughout the album. A slightly less heavy-hearted release is single ‘The Boxes’, warm and almost uplifting, it gives the album a light-hearted tint. Another almost indie sound enters the airwaves on ‘An Avatar On A Black Surface’ which plays with beautifully dramatic crooning vocals.
The album is a fusion of melancholic and danceable elements, that last element coming to the forefront on ‘Ready To Hide’. All songs on the album play with influences taken from indie, experimental rock, and electronica, it’s a refreshing and exciting blend and a perfect introduction to the sound and musical palette of Present Paradox. Those broody, crooning stay with us on ‘The Flood’, and throughout the album until the very last track in ‘A Lens To Find A Trace’.
Present Paradox’ latest work takes us on a journey of feelings of loss of control, personal upheavals, the end of familiar closeness, political subjects, the climate crisis and so much more. It is an artistic exploration of musicality combined with subjects important to the artists, and it is adamant that the project was born from a place of passion. The album is a combination of krautrock, post-punk and experimental rock, all blended into one unique sound. Add a dash of jazz, and you’ve got the eclectic sound of Present Paradox!
