A hazy and soft, soothing alternative pop EP was released by Shipping Forecast. ‘Chapter II : Rising Slowly’ is a collection of five songs inspired by themes of forgiveness and growth.
Slowly easing us into their mesmerising sound is single ‘The Lantern’, which is a warm and harmonious track driven by stunning vocals and a simplistic soundscape. The British outfit explores themes of pain, betrayal, self acceptance and moving on on ‘Chapter II : Rising Slowly’. The concept of ‘home’ is mentioned on the first single, and returns on ‘Home For The Found’.
Its slowly weaving sound brings us a feeling of rest and comfort, a sound we might not have heard before, but feels and sounds familiar. It is those soft and subtle vocals that are quietly confident in their own power that make us willing to listen closely, sit and be for a moment. The moment doesn’t last long enough, Shipping Forecast are an outfit of another calibre, who have made their own rules and make us want to stick to them.
Shipping Forecast is couple Ben and Imogen who have landed on a specific sound that draws on both of their strength and influences taken from a folk and singer-songwriter background. We hear a soulful folk sound on ‘Ghosts’, and hints of indie on ‘These Grounds’. This EP is a mix of pensive sounds, introspective thoughts and multiple nudges for our fast paced society to move slower. With ‘Chapter II : Rising Slowly’ on, I would happily move slower, or not at all for that matter.
