Album: Clark Graham – Last Train To New Orleans

‘Bourbon Street Blues’ is the powerful and energetic folk rock opener of Clark Graham’s brand new album ‘Last Train To New Orleans’. It’s the Canadian musicians’ seventh studio album and a hard-hitting one at that.

Those of us that love a bit of roots and Americana, will thoroughly enjoy the powerful and passionate sound of Clark Graham. His musically pleasing compositions come to us in the form of soundscapes blending soft and hazy vocals with subtle guitar-driven sounds that together make for contemplative short stories. ‘Ash To The Wind’ is a warm and colourful ballad, ‘Can’t Get My Mind Off Of You’ adds a light hint of horns to the mix, whereas the album’s title track is that bit more uplifting, and sounds like a refreshing mix of indie Americana. The song is a soaring and melancholically sounding one, and a favourite of ours.

‘American Dream Blues’ is perfectly comparable to Johnny Cash’ ‘Cocaine Blues’ with its own stamp firmly pressed on its deliciously harmonious soundscape. By this time we might’ve changed favourites… The album spins around the theme of leaving and “a sense of where I’ve been and where I’m going all wrapped into one.” Graham’s sound is influenced by the classic country of the 60’s and 70’s and has that warm-hearted feeling of years gone by running all the way through it. His soft and emotive ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?’ is a heart-breaking request for love, ‘The Otherside’ hints at a crooning indie shoegaze sound that we very much enjoy.

‘Last Train To New Orleans’ ends in stunning and keys-driven track ‘Until The Wheels Fall Off’ on which Clark’s voice shines most brightly, getting full attention, supported beautifully by a warm and theatrical soundscape. On the eight tracks Graham brought together on his new album, he well and truly persuaded us to become fans of his extensive musical catalogue.
