Ellie Temple has created a captivating alternative pop sound driven by the sharp voice of its creator Michelle Magpiong. Her latest release is EP ‘Runnin’ on Empty’, a collection of five songs reflecting the downfall of a five-year relationship.
‘Man on the Moon’ is the softly soaring first single of the EP and brings a comforting pop sound that slowly sways to the rhythm of a summery afternoon breeze. A simple guitar-driven soundscape supports her strong and poignant voice, while ‘Breaking’ is a heart-wrenching ballad with some refreshing rhythm-changes. Ellie Temple has given us her heart on a plate, a brave thing to do, although being a musician is a brave enough thing in itself. She’s truly pulling on her heartstrings with these emotive short stories, and the way she talks to the grief of a breakup.
We get an uplift on ‘Knuckles White’ which is a subtly energising alternative pop song with a faster paced rhythm, fast in comparison to what came before it. ‘Shaky Ground’ introduces a soft sound similar to a Guda drum, which colours the song and its EP and adds another layer of Ellie Temple’s musical abilities. ‘Runnin’ on Empty’ ends with the hopeful-sounding ‘Garden Grow’, a favourite of ours. Hinting at a hazy folk sound, the song slowly builds towards a soothing chorus. On this EP, Ellie Temple has truly shown her valour and ability to turn hurt and mourning into something beautiful.
