Albums: Blossoms – Gary

Stockport-based legendary indie outfit Blossoms have just released their brand new album ‘Gary’, and it shows they’ve still got the hang of creating intricate indie bangers!

For their brand new ten track collection, the band worked with regular collaborator James Skelly, Josh-Lloyed Watson, and co-wrote a pair of tracks with CMAT. The album opener sets the tone for what we can expect of the next chapter of Blossoms, ‘Big Star’ is a subtle and unhurried indie anthem. Using the building blocks they know so well, the band create hazy indie slash bedroom pop tracks with soft vocals and colourful soundscapes. Atmospheric vocal harmonies shine bright on ‘What Can I Say After I’m Sorry’, title track ‘Gary’ ups the tempo and brings a hint of disco!

Soulfully shimmering musical elements are at the core of Blossoms’ ‘Gary’ which makes for a pleasant and uplifting listen. Elements of electronic rock and spoken vocals enter the mix on ‘I Like Your Look’, we return to the dancefloor for the softly swaying ‘Nightclub’, and the synth-driven new wave sound on ‘Perfect Me’ completes this eclectic mix of influences. On the new album, singer Tom says: “The heart of this record is about the five of us recording live in a room together for the first time in years. We wanted to capture the energy of what it’s like when five friends decide to start a band and make music.” On single ‘Mothers’ he adds: “‘Mothers’ is an ode to my and Joe’s friendship and it references the fact that our mothers were friends back in the 80’s.”

With ‘Gary’ the band that has over ten years of experience, shows that their cup is by far not empty yet. ‘Cinnamon’ is one of our favourites, a slightly more complex indie rock track with those same soft vocal harmonies and a chorus that we can’t wait to sing along to when the band head out on their headline UK and Ireland tour in October and November with support from Red Rum Club. We slow down on ‘Slow Down’ before heading into the album’s closer, ‘Why Do I Give You The Worst Of Me’ which is the rockiest of the bunch and ups the ante and has the band closing their album on the highest of highs. ‘Gary’ is a refreshing collection of slick indie rock tracks by a band that is as exciting as they were when they released their self-titled album in 2016!
