We first came across Lilla Shy through artist Tom Bright, and a few days ago witnessed her emotive and open-hearted lyricism live at Sofar Sounds Newcastle. We didn’t need more reason to give her new album ‘Layers’ a listen and share some thoughts on it with you!
The Italian singer and songwriter brought her songs to us in stripped back form, highlighting her powerful and poetic lyrics, and stunning voice. She sings with all she has, conveying a passionate we don’t see often enough in performers. Songs such as ‘Layers’, ‘Lonely’, ‘Text Me When You’re Home’, ‘Bright’ and ‘Ugly’ hit the spot lyrically and musically and talk about being lonely, the fears that come with being a woman and walking home along at night, a pure and accepting love, and self-deprecation.
Lilla does not shy away from tough subjects and uses her songs and lyrics to make sense of her experiences, feelings, and the world as a whole. While she goes through the stages of accepting herself and apologising for being critical of her appearance, she takes us on a journey of recovery which makes listening to Lilla Shy’s ‘Layers’ a healing experience. Its twelve songs are brought together by elements of indie and electronic pop, and make for a subtly exciting, energising listen. It is her highly anticipated, self-produced debut and it is a collection she can be very proud of.
On ‘Layers’ she unravels the layers of herself, blending electro pop with indie rock, introducing a gentle piano ballad and heavenly strings. ‘Layers’ features cameos from artists Ed Harcourt on keys, Gita Langley on violin and mixing and mastering by Alessandro La Barbera. On Wednesday the 9th of October, Lilla Shy will be celebrating the album’s release with a headline show at The Troubadour in London, alongside a series of shows across the country.
