A legendary stadium rock band such as Interpol will always be able to deliver a well-coordinated show, which is what they did celebrating the 20th anniversary of their album ‘Antics’ just this week in Newcastle.
The guitar rock group brought ‘Antics’ in its entirety to celebrate its anniversary on a weekday at Newcastle’s O2 City Hall. Their eager audience was hungry for Interpol’s hits and celebrated them by singing along to every word, though a bit placid. We saw more of the band and their audience at their Edinburgh show in May last year, though that might’ve had to do with the fact that no one parties like the Scots. Without being able to compare both shows, Newcastle still captivated.
The band have been going for nearly my entire lifespan and know how to please a crowd, they brought us the guitar rock we knew and had long been waiting for. Since ‘Antics’ is a short but sweet one, they added some banging tracks to their setlist and encore. Our favourite ‘Antics’ tracks such as ‘Evil’, ‘Slow Hands’, and ‘Not Even Jail’ all passed the revue as well as ‘The Rover’, ‘Rest My Chemistry’, and ‘My Desire’, with ‘All the Rage Back Home’ being the undeniable crowd-favourite.
Those of us attentive enough noticed this wasn’t Interpol’s original line-up, if that or the weekday show made it lose a little of its pace we’ll never know. Singer and frontman Paul Banks still seemed to enjoy himself more than the last time we saw them perform, connecting with his audience and sharing in their energy. Strong guitar rock anthems that have laid the base for many a grassroots band just starting their career made for a mesmerising and exciting live show and one we won’t soon forget!
