DIY slouch rock artist Skinner just released his EP ‘Geek Love’ after gathering a following with single releases ‘Calling in Sick’ and the title track of the EP. The EP plays with the inspirations that have formed the Irish artist and his ever evolving sound. Skinner is based in Dublin and writes, records, and produces songs about “growing up and overcoming a dirt-flecked 21st century existence”.
The four track counting EP was released on Faction Records, and showcases the no-wave provocateur who’s created a lively alternative punk sound. Rumbling and distorted, his mix of dark guitar lines, thumping drum rolls, and charmingly flat vocals make for an exciting and energising listen. He’s showing himself unapologetically on ‘Calling in Sick’, and turns bombastic on title track ‘Geek Love’. Livening up our playlists, ‘Geek Love’ is colourful and dynamic, hinting at a chaotic aesthetic that translates how we feel most days when waking up; not knowing what to focus on and how to move along with it.
‘Tell My Ma’ is more refined, infectious, and punk-driven, here’s a thunderous punk rock track with a fanatic chorus and a feral soundscape. He ends this collection of tracks with ‘New Wave Vaudeville’ which shows best his love for funky and infectious guitar grooves. On ‘Geek Love’, Skinner said: “The EP is inspired by disco and noise music. Taking all the pleasantries and rhythms associated with 70’s disco songs and throwing them in a blender with harsher atonal guitars and lyrics. A lot of the themes in the songs explore embracing individuality and expressing that outwardly without being afraid of what people might think. I wanted to create a new wave of disco music where I could let out that frustration and anger while also being able to dance along to it.”
One thing he’s undoubtedly achieved is embracing not just his listener’s but his own individuality and a way of expressing himself musically. The EP will soon be followed by the debut album, ‘New Wave Vaudeville’ which is due out on the 10th of January. With its title track having already been released we’re sure it’ll be another expressive and explosive exploration of musical violence.
