Album: Singing River – Talkin’ Destination Blues

Dynamic alternative Americana rock duo Singing River just released a colourful new album, ‘Talkin’ Destination Blues’ is a softly swaying collection of comforting songs.

Singing River is dynamic duo Mikey James and Anthony Kuhn who have been making waves within the Americana scene in particular with their latest and highly anticipated album. The album came out at the start of this month and has been a warm hug ever since its release. Its softly moving, wandering guitar-driven soundscapes are most adamant on its title track and ‘A Hill Worth Climbing’, while ‘I Keep Running’ hints at influences taken from rock’n’roll and comes with an infectious bluesy rhythm and those strong, enigmatic vocals. Add a touch of brass and you’ve got what is a tasteful single!

They playfully dub their unique blend of sounds ‘northern folk’ or ‘steamboat-pop’, it’s a genre we’d not encountered before but can, after listening to ‘Talkin’ Destination Blues’, fully get behind. ‘Gideons Bible’ is a ballad-like pop release, ‘Got a New Dance’ brings in a faster paced soundscape, lead single ‘She Feels Like a Diamond’ shows their evolving up until now and comes with a driving and transforming rock feel. The album features a roster of talented musicians aside from the musical duo that knows what direction to take their music in. ‘Talkin’ Destination Blues’ is a sonic journey through American music history.

‘Hot Air’ and ‘Born in the Spirit of ’76’ take on a softer sound, a charming and subtle mix that is the perfect soundtrack for a snowy Sunday afternoon or a an evening after work, enjoying the mundane. The duo have brought together influences from Americana, folk, and rock, and have created a carefully crafted sound that is a wandering welcome, a sound that refreshes and cleanses the palette; being anything but pretentious, and so very well worked out.
