‘Grieving Doves’ is Trash Pillow‘s tribute to the Berlin-based activist group of the same name, The Grieving Doves are a grassroots movement formed by Berliners from diverse national, political, and religious backgrounds.
Trash Pillow released an ode to the group in the form of a punching punk rock track that is ferocious and passionate. This tribute draws on the dove as a long-recognised symbol for peace and mourning, they lead demonstrations wearing wings adorned with the hand-written names of those lost in Gaza since October 2023. Trash Pillow remind the world of the toll on civilian life. Their powerful plea to end this war on humans is amplified by their thumping rhythm and soaring vocals.
“The song ‘Grieving Doves’ was born out of a real-life encounter.” The band attended a demonstration in Berlin where the Grieving Doves led the march, “their presence a haunting yet hopeful symbol of resistance”. Moved by the gravity of the moment, the band returned to their studio that night, intending to do anything but write music. “‘Grieving Doves’ is a reflection of that moment,” the band explains. “We were so overwhelmed by the weight of it all—violence and war playing out on screens, innocent lives lost, the helplessness we felt. But seeing the Grieving Doves, these everyday people fighting for peace, it reignited something in us. This song is our way of standing with them.”
