EP: M. Byrd – In Breech

German singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer M. Byrd just released a subtly mesmerising EP connection five songs with fans old and new.

This soft and subtle alternative folk pop sound is a playful and warm one built around quite the extensive sounds. On ‘In Breech’ M. Byrd maps out his own path through evolving soundscapes and hints of alternative, synth, and indie pop. Beautiful vocals and calming musical compositions enriched by funky elements make this shoegaze mixed with pop EP an eclectic and exciting one.

‘Always’ is the colourful and subtly vibrant opener of the EP, introducing M. Byrd’s expansive sound to its listeners. He has created compositions that match his warm vocal tones and brings familiarity and comfort on ‘My Starlight’. He shows his poetic side with lyrics such as “you’re the question to my answer” and slowly rocks us from side to side. ‘Underwater’ adds a hint of pop to this medley of sounds, being a bolder statement of his versatile musical ensemble.

On ‘In Breech’ he chronicles a season of profound change, having become a dad and having grown as a person and artist. On this EP we hear the influences he’s taken from journeys between Hamburg and Denmark, during which he explored different sounds and tunings as he wrote his songs. ‘Halo (Blue Letter)’ is the soft and theatrical alternative pop song that adds a touch of drama, the EP’s closing statement ‘One Way or the Other’ is a personal favourite, playing with vocal harmonies and a faster paced rhythm.

The colours of the songs on ‘In Breech’ blend together like a watercolour painting, bringing music, art, and poetry, as well as story telling and open-heartedness together. Alongside co-producer John Joseph, M. Byrd brought the EP to life. He leaves us with this; “I hope that people feel like these songs are a space they can come back to when they are going through a drastic change in life.”
