Live: Red Rum Club returns to the north east

My first visit to the newly refurbished Digital on Newcastle’s Time Square was also my last gig of the year, with Red Rum Club headlining the venue with support from local indie outfits Camel Island and Bear Park!

My favourite and only Scouse Americana outfit, together with their local supports, filled out the roughly 800 capacity venue with live music enthusiasts, young ones and their weekend drinking parents. With an early start and finish, due to its club night, sadly I missed local and versatile indie outfit Camel Island, but according to second support Bear Park they knocked it out of the park. Bear Park brought an energising set of indie rock tracks and a passionate performance from the three young lads that have been working their way up the music career ladder throughout this past year.

After Bear Park’s warming up of the venue, the Liverpudlian’s in Red Rum Club headed out on stage in front of an ecstatic and already nearly sloshed audience. Despite the amount of alcohol that had already flowed, they all knew every single word to every single song and made sure to sing them along so the atmosphere was immaculate. Red Rum Club took some time to warm up but soon returned to their usual and highly energetic selves with charming and bouncing performances from Fran, Tom, Michael, Simon, Joe, and Neil.

Their brass-filled and colourful Americana pop rock blend is a sound I don’t hear often and with singles such as ‘Black Cat’, ‘Nightcalling’, ‘Eleanor’, ‘Hole in My Home’, and personal favourite ‘Kids Addicted’ the night was always going to be very memorable! The energy of their endlessly fanatic soundscapes and the strong bond between musicians that is adamant on stage made for another great live experience. Nearing the end of their set it was clear their audience’s main motivation to come out that night was to sing along to ‘Would You Rather Be Lonely’, so when the encore consisted of ‘Angeline’, ‘Vanilla’, ánd ‘Would You Rather Be Lonely’ that truly completed the night.

My first visit to this new live venue was, clearly, a successful one, although it did feel like we were high jacking a club night and an established venue such as The Cluny would have been a better environment for this explosive night. Either way, the wine wasn’t too pricy, and the audience wasn’t too distracting so all in all it was a night I would happily relive!
