VESSELS‘ debut EP is a nine track counting wah wah-driven guitar rock collection of refreshingly edgy tracks that I’ve loved discovering!
VESSELS makes me feel like I’m on a high speed train, thundering through ever-changing landscapes guided by the powerful and guitar-driven energy he brings to his debut album. ‘Fade Away’ is its unapologetic album-opener and sets the tone straightaway. Commonalities between songs on this album are that they are short, sweet, exciting, and uplifting, ‘Nowhere To Be’ and ‘Hey Baby’ perfect examples of that success formula. A personal favourite is slightly more punk-infused, fast paced shot of caffeine ‘One Of These Days’.
VESSELS’ rugged and uplifting garage rock’n’roll is reminiscent of The Hives, The Strokes, and early Kings of Leon, and comes in all shapes and sizes which we experience throughout this nine track counting debut. We hear the influence of Alex Turner’s usage of his vocal chords on ‘Need Ya’, while Tom Davies, the musician behind VESSELS, tones it down a little on ‘Papillon’. ‘Retrospect’ is its most layered and intricate release, with a warm rhythm and exciting compositions similar to the signature style of The Libertines. Here’s another slightly introspective song, ‘On A Limb’ before we head into closing chapter ‘It’s You’.
This album that was released at the end of last year has coloured my playlists and makes me feel supported in my adoration of swaying rock’n’roll. Its collection of tracks is charming and empowering, and at times a little gloomy, but never too gloomy. ‘It’s You’ is its slowest portrayal of Australian alternative rock, as part of this collection it rounds the experience of getting to know VESSELS, leaving no stone unturned.
