At the start of the year we celebrate Independent Venue Week, no exceptions. This year, we celebrated by attending CVC’s headline set at KU Stockton with support from Sarah Johnsone and The Ransoms, and it was a memorable celebration!
Despite us missing opening act The Ransoms, we got well worth for our money with Sarah Johnsone and CVC. Fast rising ethereal shoegaze singer, songwriter and musician Sarah Johnsone opened the show and brought a crystal clear set together with her immaculate band. The band of high caliber brought their incredible compositions filled with soul and passion. Johnsone has truly come into her own and delivered a confident and swaying performance.
Single ‘No Serenade’ got a cheer, and although it was also one of our favourites, the others on her set list well and truly deserved the same enthusiasm. Johnsone and band ended their set with personal favourite ‘Strange Concoction’, the rockiest and most ferocious of her music catalogue so far! A packed KU Stockton swayed along to Sarah Johnsone ahead of Welsh eccentric disco rock outfit’s CVC entrance to the stage.
The grooviest band of the very moment entered the stage and had us dancing and smiling from the beginning until the very end. Their ridiculously enthusiastic rock vibes and made for another incredibly memorable night. Singles such as ‘Knock Knock’, ‘Docking The Pay’, ‘Hail Mary’ and latest single release ‘The Lowrider’ were all received with much enthusiasm, rightfully. Both band and audience fed off each other and made for a wonderful atmosphere throughout the night.
The fantastically skilled band didn’t just wow their audience, but also each other, and was clearly having a great time together. That enthusiasm and passion for their craft carried throughout the room, and carried us home. They swapped instruments like it was nothing, most took their turn in the spotlight, and brought incredible guitar licks that are still ringing in our ears, and we’re not complaining. We’re big fans of a good guitar shred, and at CVC’s headline a plethora of shreds was delivered. We love their style, their talent, their passion, and no band has so far been able to top their live show, CVC, be back soon.
