‘When The War Was Starting’ was the latest single to be released from Charles Costa‘s self-titled album, and it’s a bright and revived guise under his new moniker!
The artist formerly known as King Charles released the single ahead of his album, and with it announced a new chapter that is driven by powerful and emotive indie rock hooks. On his new album, Costa said: “This is an album of new songs exploring the distance between life’s longings and laments. Always looking for a way to ‘complete’ life – find truth or meaning or purpose – leading me down paths of discovery and revelation. Sometimes ending up at dead ends, sometimes to new openings and avenues. These journeys seem to be a bouncing between the boundaries of longings and laments and that is what is behind most of this album.”
‘When The War Was Starting’ is a tasteful sneak peek of this collection of songs, highlighting his poetical prowess and way of colouring emotional subjects. Stunning crooning vocals and a keys-driven soundscape make this single a perfect introduction to the genre-bending sound of Charles Costa. Rather theatrical, this indie alternative folk rock release slowly builds towards an eruptive chorus amplified by wandering keys and driving drums.
Various factors have influenced his rebirth, from suddenly sharing his artist moniker with the actual monarch, to this already deeply personal artist becoming increasingly eager to explore the vulnerabilities of the man behind the music. That desire is powered by his ongoing charity endeavours, which recently reached a new peak as he completed the last of his 90 Marathons in 90 Days challenge raising money for James’ Place, a charity dedicated to suicide prevention for men.
