Live: The Lathums celebrate new album in stripped back form

Energetic indie outfit The Lathums stripped their songs down to their core for a stripped back tour to promote their brand new album ‘Matter Does Not Define’, and mesmerised their audience in the process.

They were eager, excited, and ready to please their fans of the early hour; those that pre-ordered the album before its release at Newcastle’s Reflex, and went to a gig where the band would be playing new material most of us hadn’t heard yet. The NUSU was nicely packed and ready for The Lathums anthems, old and new. Even more excited then the band’s eagerly awaiting audience was the band itself, in particular singer and frontman Alex Moore. Bouncing and smiling in-between songs, while dead serious while playing the songs he’s poured his heart into, Moore showed what it takes to be a truly captivating frontman. The band played a mix of tracks including fan favourites such as ‘Heartbreaker’, ‘The Great Escape’ and ‘How Beautiful Life Can Be’.

Their new album tracks are once again stunning short stories that left quite the impression on their fans, with Alex’ outstanding vocals shining bright on tracks such as ‘Leave No Stone Unturned’ and ‘No Direction’. Jokes and the excitement of the band that cheered each other on throughout the night made for a welcoming and entertaining atmosphere. Comments such as “we are great musicians that are able to change things up”, and “I’m still figuring out how to speak to humans” could have been part of a stand up set, the way Moore delivered them, yet they never diverted the attention from the band’s incredible musical catalogue that is now expanded with another collection of powerful indie anthems.

When musicians come from behind their wall of sound to change things up a little, things either go tits up, or extremely well, and for The Lathums the latter was the case. Through such an intimate set the band made a connection with this particular audience they would not have made would they have played fully amplified. The excited energy of the audience that just experienced a very special event was palpable when they made their way home, and some made their way towards the after party at Newcastle’s The WonderBar. The Lathums showed us what great musicians are by performing their songs in an acoustic setting, and we can’t wait to hear their new songs in fully amplified setting during their upcoming tour of the UK and Europe!
