EP: Messy Eater – Starters

‘Starters’ is the latest collection of enigmatic alternative electronic pop tracks by Pete Bott, who’s released the EP under the moniker of Messy Eater, his latest music and illustration project.

‘Starters’ takes us on a colourful journey through different influences, moving away from the high-energy expectations of electronic pop, and instead bringing us unhurried and unfrenzied soundscapes with opening track ‘Shake It, Drop It’ being a great example of that. This EP serves as both a celebration and an exploration, breaking boundaries, defying expectations, and making us move along in the process.

Messy Eater offers shimmering synths, pulsating beats, and an open invitation for us to join in on the festivities. Bringing multiple elements such as soft vocals, colourful harmonies, and shimmering hooks, Messy Eater has created wandering tracks that take us on an enlivening experience. ‘I’m A Mess Right Now’ exemplifies that. His strength lies within his ability to weave together a diverse range of electronic textures and pop sensibilities, blending airy vocal hooks with intricate productions and elements taken from synth-wave, disco, and even ambient electronica.

A stunning intro on ‘Feels Good’ hints at the influence of shoegaze and appealing vocals add to its slow and sensitive feel and sound. On the track, Messy Eater shows that electronic sounds don’t need to be maximalist to be impactful. We ‘Work Life Balance’ we end on a high note, a perfect farewell to his “anything goes” melodic song-writing and kaleidoscopic sampledelica.

With ‘Starters’, Messy Eater has delivered a collection that is both dynamic and refined, offering a fresh perspective on electronic pop’s ever-expanding horizons. Whether you’re looking for something to dance to, to dream to, or simply to soundtrack a moment of quiet joy, this EP proves that you don’t have to choose, you can have it all, and at your own pace.
