EP: West Union – Buzzard Roost

Four warm and wondering new alternative folk singles make up West Union‘s brand new EP ‘Buzzard Roost’. They captured the feeling of solitude and bliss that comes from being left on your own device with nature.

‘Philadelphia’ is the soothing opening track of this new EP, setting the tone for a soft and soothing listening experience. Their soundscapes are subtle, their vocals are strong, and their rhythms slowly swaying. Their first release was very conceptual, while ‘Buzzard Roost’ tells a story and captures a feeling at a certain point in time. They tell their short stories through vocal harmonies, folky flutes, and soft bass sounds, ‘Abstract Colors’ brings those together and slowly fades into ‘Maroon’.

‘Maroon’ listens like an ode to loneliness, a vibrant and humble sound driven by the voices of sirens luring us into their musical forest. This musical masterpiece achieves exactly what the band hopes their listeners will gain from listening to their new EP, “we hope that people will feel as though they are at the cabin the EP was recorded with us”. Its softness and refined compositions make for a restorative chapter within this new book of West Union.

The band ends their new record, which was named after a trail in West Union which ends at Buzzardroost rock, with a slightly more uplifting, elevating sound on ‘September Sun’. We hear the rough and ready, personable, sound the band hoped to achieve on this EP, “We didn’t want ‘Buzzard Roost’ to come out super polished in its production, we wanted it to be a bit more raw and unadulterated, as to kind of capture the imperfection of the cabin we were in, and the nature surrounding it. Every choice we made when recording these songs, was made to reflect on our time spent at the cabin in West Union, together.”

“Buzzardroost was originally the name of the band when it was first created in 2019, however after a five year hiatus we changed the name to West Union. The title of the EP pays homage to both our original namesake, and the trip that formed our band.” Craftfully, they have created an EP that honours their past, allows others to heal with them, and inaugurates a bright future.
