Rising Manchester-based indie singer-songwriter and rockstar Alex Spencer returns with the release of his spirited new single ‘Bucket List’ and is currently on his debut headline tour throughout the UK. With another show at Newcastle’s legendary The Cluny and a massive hometown headline at Manchester’s Gorilla, it was about the right time to catch up with Alex and talk to him about the tour and his plans for the upcoming few years!
Spencer talks openly and passionately about his tour, music, and experience within music so far, and shares how he first performed at an open mic on a family holiday in Asia, performing three songs that made him never put down the guitar again. “We were on holiday in Thailand and at an open mic I played three songs, and when I got back to Manchester I started busking on the streets and from there I started getting opportunities, building my fanbase and social media. I blew up on Facebook with a cover of Oasis, and since then I’ve been supporting artists across the UK and got my song on FIFA.”
His current tour schedule is quite a wild one, as are his audiences, yet he’s learnt to have no expectations, “For every show so far, I don’t know what to expect and if anyone is going to turn up, but then we step on that stage, and the energy is great and I put on a memorable show for everyone, each night gets better and better.” One of his favourite cities within England would be Bristol, “Bristol is the most beautiful city I’ve been to in England. All the venues have been amazing.” With a younger fanbase in London, shows in the big smoke have been wildest of all, “We’ve got a younger fanbase in London, so they’re up for singing and giving it their all. That show was probably one of our best ever shows. You could feel the excitement in the room.”
The exciting highs come with tiring lows, as Spencer mentions, and he’s very focused on making sure he takes good care of himself when out on the road. In general, “Being an artist is a rollercoaster, and what inspires me to keep going is the progress I’ve made.” But that doesn’t stop him from having some big goals and dreams, “I want some more radio plays, be played on the BBC. I’ve already got some great festivals coming up, TRNSMT, Neighbourhood in Warrington, and Sound City in Liverpool. This year I want to go on a support tour and build my fanbase, and just keep at it! I want to work harder, master production, and other instruments, and I want to play Glastonbury eventually!”
What can we expect from his live show, and his upcoming festival sets? “It’s going to be a workout, it’s one of those that if you’re stressed, you’ll leave buzzing and energetic, it’s going to be very fun, and a rave after the show, I’m not going to spoil too much…”
