Live: BIIG TIME bring modern nostalgic indie sound to KU Stockton

I regretted not bringing earplugs to a show I thought was going to be mild in sound, but taste-wise, BIIG TIME and Sugar Roulette delivered on exactly the sound that makes my heart beat a little faster.

Self-proclaimed weirdo rock outfit Sugar Roulette blend, bend and nearly break genres like it’s their second nature and they were undoubtedly the perfect opener for BIIG TIME’s roaring live show. The four piece brought heavily distorted riffs, fuzzy guitar licks, warm bass lines and thunderous drum fills for Stockton’s KU, a stage they’ve graced many times before. Confidently and comfortably the band performed their repertoire of genre hopping tracks with hints of indie, rock, and a touch of tropical pop.

Their live performance was rather addictive, amplified by a charismatic boogieing frontman, a guitarist and bass player that swapped instruments throughout and a drummer that also used his vocal chords. Young and eager, ever-evolving as they rock along their musical pathway, Sugar Roulette had us completely hooked by the end of their set.

The undeniable energy and passion for music and performing vibrated through the room as soon as trio BIIG TIME entered the stage. Brothers took and drummer Liam Hoskins brought their modern melancholic sound and open hearted stories to life with a set just that bit too short. A brotherly love and familiarity coloured their entire performance and swept us off our feet. As part of this new project, DMA’S Johnny gets to truly shine vocally, though still shining brightest when singing in unison with brother Matty who’s also known for his part in musical project PLANET.

As they played their debut release it quickly became clear they’ve already got some fans of the first hour despite being brand new. The successes of their previous projects would have helped but this new one is of just as high a calibre as the others they perform with. A personal favourite would be single ‘Parades’, which they performed together, hinting at their Melbourne busking days. After this welcome breather and intimate performance they turned the volume back up with previously released singles ‘Bigger Than Nothing’ and ‘It’s You’ which made for a perfect end of the night.

Although some BIIG TIME songs were initially written for DMA’S or PLANET, those that at the time did not suit those respective projects have now finally found a home with BIIG TIME. After their show the brothers took all the time they had to meet their fans old and new, with many having already met during Johnny’s DMA’S days. For many, including me, quite the unforgettable night. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone do what they do best and seeing them enjoying what they enjoy most, in Johnny’s case that is harmonising with hist brother.
