After a five year hiatus Newton Faulkner returns with unapologetic blues rock release ‘Alright Alright Alright’, taken from his eight studio album, ‘OCTOPUS’ is due for release later this year on Cooking Vinyl Records!
This explosive and riffing rock track comes with a short film that portrays Faulkner and band playing this new heavy alternative rock track. Thumping and bass-driven, this new release has truly pulled me into the musical catalogue of Faulkner. The acclaimed singer songwriter marked the start of this new chapter in November last year when he cut his iconic ginger dreadlocks during the finale of his tour at London’s Islington Assembly Hall. The haircut, which took place during an acoustic performance of hit single ‘Dream Catch Me’, benefited Teenage Cancer Trust while symbolising a new direction for Faulkner, both visually and musically.
Having clearly changed musical direction, Faulkner is addressing a new audience while tapping in and out of his existing fanbase, creating a genre blending style of powerful alternative rock that is as expressive as addictive. On his transformation and change in sound, Faulkner added; “I felt like my hair was tyring me to the past, the guy that sang ‘Dream Catch Me’ from under a large pile of hair is a distant memory and has been for a while. This is about letting go, there is no part of this record that is trying to recreate anywhere I’ve been before, however well it might have gone. This is me, this is my head, this is what I love.” On ‘Alright Alright Alright’, Newton Faulkner goes all out, hitting, stomping and hooking from its beginning until its very end.
With this new direction in sound, Newton Faulkner shows the importance of creating from a place of authenticity, and not confirming to the expectations that are put on artists to stick to what their audience knows and expect from them. ‘Alright Alright Alright’, and undoubtedly the rest of this upcoming record, have me hooked, and where I would not have added his upcoming live dates to my calendar before, I now have. So I’ll see you down the front in October?!
