‘Gothtones’ is The Gothtones‘ fourth studio album and brings a refreshingly versatile goth rock sound to our speakers and playlists. Blending and varying styles, the band have created an album that listens like a maze; with never-ending twists and turns.
Album opener ‘Piranha’ plays upon a ska-like rhythm and brings a subtly festive sound to our ears as we get introduced to the dark yet warm sound of The Gothtones. ‘The Two Of Us’ seems heavily inspired by synth rock outfit The Cure which offers pleasant comfort, the track soon turns into a sound undeniably Gothtones as they change rhythm and direction and turn down the pace, ‘Tragedy Menagerie’ is soft and introspective, while ‘Skin And Bones’ is slightly heavier yet just as mysterious sounding. We hear a lighter sound on ‘Requiem In Blue’, which throughout this musical journey might highlight its vocal harmonies best.
‘Deadbolt And Chain’ is another dark and mysterious track with a soundscape that feels like a weighted blanket, while ‘The Candivores’ is that bit lighter, bringing an illuminating soundscape. We hear softer vocals on ‘Midnight And Holly’, and get entranced by ‘The Countdown’. The last of the bunch is light and almost angelic indie track ‘Gimme Sunshine’, which almost acts as a palette cleanser ahead of us listener to the album once more from the beginning.
Having clearly been inspired by musical greats such as The Doors, The Beatles, and Joy Division, The Gothtones have still mastered the art of creating a new and rejuvenating, electrifying sound that is different and interestingly captivating. Ten tracks showcase the band’s musical abilities perfectly and bring a refreshing and unique sound to our speakers!
