DUG – Livelong Day

As I sway to the beat of the drum, I notice myself being swept up by the sound of DUG‘s latest single, ‘Livelong Day’. Building on a worldly folk rock sound, the track is a charming and wandering piece of boundary-pushing folk.

Dublin-based duo DUG has curated a colourful palette, bringing a song that is softly thumps and gently sways as it takes us on a musical journey through story telling vocals and contemporary folk compositions. The duo consists of Californian Jonny Pickett and folk artist Lorkin O’Reilly and have firmly established themselves within their scene with ‘Livelong Day’ another string to their bow. The single is taken from the highly anticipated debut album, due for release later this year.

Recorded onto tape and tracked live, ‘Livelong Day’ showcases a different side of DUG, it’s heavy, moody, and earthy. Lyrically it depicts a drunken dance in a faerie ring, the protagonist comes to his senses mid way through being swung around the mulberry bush and tries convincing himself he’s going to get out okay. This is a sort of play on the Irish folktale “The Legend of Knockgrafton”. Blending modern sounds with classic folktales, twisting and turning them into soaring pieces of folk rock, that’s what makes DUG stand out.
