Album: Judy Blank – Big Mood

Judy Blank‘s ‘Big Mood’ is a cumulation of the inspirations and influences she’s picked up over the past few decades within music, it’s a collection of determined alternative pop tracks with her stunning voice at the center!

She opens ‘Big Mood’ with a light-hearted alternative pop release, ‘Killing Time’ is open and honest, brings a colourful and uplifting sound to the album, and introduces this collection beautifully. She reflects on ‘Toy Heart’, a soft and minimalistic track that listens like a subtle ballad, and on ‘Pony’ she completely changes pace and shows off the rockstar that is at her core. Sounding eclectic and blending influences from pop and rock, the track highlights her ability to riff, something that makes this a personal favourite on the thirteen track counting release. We hear Americana influences and bluesy guitar sound on ‘I’m Out’, while previous songs on the track list still hint at the soft-hearted pop star Blank has established herself to be.

With ‘You Say’ we return to an alternative sound, which is also one of the tracks highlighting the versatility of her vocal range, which is impressive and adamant on ‘Big Mood’. ‘Over Now’ is most introspective, soft, and emotive and a warm exit that finishes the journey Judy Blank has written and released under the name ‘Big Mood’. The album is filled with emotion and personal stories, this album shows her growth as a musician and poet, and it is a grand gesture of a finish line for ‘Big Mood’. The Dutch musician fell in love with classic American cinema and has weaved that love and passion into a cinematic album of sorts.

This record gained international attention, earned praise from Elton John, and won her a RIAA Gold Award for her folk ballad ‘Tangled Up in You’. Shortly after, she made history as the first Dutch artist ever to play AmericanaFest in Nashville, proving she could hold her own on a line-up in-between the old-school big leagues. She creates, plays, teases, and elaborates all at the same time which makes ‘Big Mood’ a very pleasant listen!
