Bristol-based alternative country folk artist Elly Hopkins graced our playlists with stunningly soaring new release ‘Animal’ at the start of summer and we are still enjoying the soundwaves she created.
The track listens like a short story with a strong intro, middle, and end, her voice weaving the chapters together seamlessly. Creating a memorable story that builds anticipation from the get-go, Hopkins has quickly become a personal favourite within the country folk genre. ‘Animal’ is a guitar-driven blues rock track that provokes and showcases stubborn honesty. Growling riffs cry out for reconnection with nature, instinct, and the parts of ourselves we’ve buried under anxiety, rumination, and modern chaos.
This steadily thumping alternative new release was born from struggle, which is an emotion audible throughout, “I was sat at the kitchen table, stewing, spiralling, and feeling stuck. I picked up the guitar and out of the frustration came this rallying call…” Elly said of ‘Animal’. “It’s sometimes easy to forget that as humans we are nature, not separate from it. We are animals.” With this release, this soaring mantra, she reminds us of the gap we have created in our heads between ourselves and the core of where we’ve come from. Powerful, empowering, inspiring, ‘Animal’ needs to be listened to on repeat to be understood. From what she’s shared about this new release, we can confidently say she’s achieved the goal she set for herself.
