Lois Powell and producer Night Wolf have worked together once more on single ‘Unstoppable’, which opens on distorted acoustic guitar and leans into a trip hop and alt pop feeling with indie pop energy and cinematic undertones. Stunning story telling lyrics that are openhearted and honest drive its growing musical arrangement forward. With a focus on mood, motion, and release, this is a release to be talked about. We spoke to its creators about the coming themselves and what moves them.
Hi! Could you introduce yourself, your genre, and your musical influences?
L.P: “Hey my name is Lois Powell, I’m a folk singer songwriter and my mum played Peter, Paul and Mary in the car growing up.”
N.W: “Hi! My name is Ryan but I go by the name of Night Wolf in my music, I am a music producer from the UK, my genre is a mixed up bag between, Trip Hop/Alt Pop/Electronic and Cinematic tones! I enjoy creating music based on feeling rather than genre so it usually ends up being what it is! It is hard to pigeon hole every genre so hence why I can not pick one area to say specifically. I have a very wide and eclectic taste when it comes to music I listen to myself, from Hip Hop to Classical , Heavy metal to World music, and many genres in between with a love of Electronic sounds and Orchestral elements in story telling. I would say some of the artists that have certainly left an impression on me would be Jefferson Airplane, Cypress Hill, Wu Tang Clan, Cannibal Ox, David Arnold, Akira Yamaoka, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, Pantera, Big Pun, Clint Mansell, Leftfield, Mobb Deep, Massive Attack, Wiley, DJ Shadow, Beastie Boys, Dr.Dre, Fatboy Slim, Frank Sinatra, Orbit, Aphex Twin, Lana Del Ray, Mike Oldfield, Nirvana and Portishead to Ray Charles and The Platters. I could go on for a long time here!”
What inspired you to start making music and what inspires you to keep going?
L.P: “I was inspired by sensory deprivation and pent up emotions. Making it the most wonderful soul fulfilling thing to do at the time. I keep going because I still find it very enjoyable. Always things to be expressed and love to hear it beautifully. Can’t stop won’t stop.”
N.W: “When I was younger, even from the age of 3 I had a drum kit, I was brought up with my parents both having very different tastes in music and was sent to sleep with classical music nightly, I was pushed by my mum to learn the piano and went to lessons up till around grade 3 where I decided that I wanted to just make my own music rather then playing other peoples. I got inspiration also from my sisters growing up as they were trying to make it in the music world with a girl band called Genie, they appeared on live TV and performed to Boyzone and rubbed shoulders with a few famous people in the world of music including Edwin Star, they showed me at a young age that music could be a real thing to do as a job, on my grandads side of family is composer David Arnold and I grew up to listening to his work including the James Bond films, I also grew up in a great time in Luton as the music scene was truly thriving, there was live music and good music everywhere and everyone around me was experimenting and finding their own sound, I formed rock bands and got into producing music alone when I got my hands on a Roland Fantom X5 workstation, I did not start learning to make music with a computer until I was around 19-20 years old. I have had quite a few placements and had my music used in major sports brands to Netflix shows and well known TV shows around the world and composed music for film trailer The Essex Boys Retribution, I am now doing things independently and after releasing 9 albums with Flipper Music before this, this is my first official own releases and its on my own label – EscaVolt Records. I wanted to take control of my music and the promotion side so here we are today!”
Where do you, in general, get inspiration for your music and song-writing?
L.P: “I get inspiration from my feelings and thoughts. Oh no someone died, I can’t cope. I know, I’ll write about how I feel. Ah okay, now I’m going to pick some chords on guitar and sing it until my lungs feel tired. Ah, I feel slightly better now. And so on.”
N.W: “I also get inspiration from my own feelings and thoughts, I also get inspiration from the world around me and my viewpoint upon it. I feel I write better stuff when I am sad or depressed , which is most times haha, no but I really do not make much “happy” stuff or have much to pour into a project if things are going rosy. However I have had stints where I force myself to produce something each day and still would go back and listen to some of those songs but it’s not what I want to do when I am not exactly feeling 100% committed behind an idea if this makes sense. I am always humming something or will get many ideas for songs just keep on bugging me throughout a day where I have to at least record it on to a voice note to get it out my head. I feel I am lucky as music honestly flows through me and I don’t think it is possible to completely run out of ideas ever. I enjoy to not even think about what I am even trying to achieve most times unless I’m working on an already thought out idea, but enjoy just seeing where my mood, the artist I’m working with vibes and how the song starts to form and then see where it ends up. I try not to watch TV or listen to other music if I know I am about to get into creative mode but I know it’s most likely impossible to not be semi sub-consciously influenced by others. I have always found writing lyrics or poems has helped me get through bad periods in my life and I should write more now as it gets my mind working and I find it fun.”
Where did you get the inspiration for ‘Unstoppable’ and what do you hope people will take from the song?
L.P: “I was feeling unstoppable, in a new place in life. From what seemed like the end of years of suffering. Stepping into new shoes. I wrote this song as like Yay! I can’t wait. Hoping people vibe to this song and get to share that excitement and acknowledge their imperfect past.”
N.W: “I had heard Lois play this guitar riff on a voice note she had sent to me and I instantly heard some dusky beat in my head and it slowed down, I asked Lois to come and record the riff first and she had already wrote the lyrics but were put together alongside me building around Lois. We pushed each other during the recording process to lead the song to have this slow burn result where it ends in a climax as it reflects how we recorded the vocals in the session. It really came together quite quickly at my home studio and we had recorded and built the majority of the song in an afternoon, it took another day or two working on and we had our next collaboration. I enjoyed to work on this song from the ground up with Lois as the our previous songs Lost My Way Home and Death of The Wolf were mostly finished and I had written lyrics for them with Lois finishing off Death of Wolf, so this was cool to build from the ground up and be inspired by each other and create around each other. I hope that people can enjoy it and it makes them feel something themselves when they listen to it. I hope for people to be able to see it with a visual story to further the story telling of the song like a James Bond movie or something that would work well for our songs. We are in the process of starting to film for our music videos for each of our songs so keep your eyes peeled for that!”
Which musical achievements so far are you most proud of so far?
L.P: “Making tracks and listening. I love the songs I’ve made with Night Wolf. As well as Who Am I Now and some new ones not out yet, Our Stars Collide and Rainbow Bridge. The achievement is making music! And the joy of creating and listening to it.”
N.W: “I am quite proud of my CV in the music world so far where my music has been used, placed or been approached to create music for , right now the bigger clients have so far been major sporting brands such as the NFL and MLB , Netflix show El Club, Hollyoaks and being used in a Red Cross advert, I also created the music for the film trailer to The Essex Boys Retribution, my other placements so far include : Channel 4, Sky Atlantic, UK Environment Agency, Canal+, Grip, France 5, NHK, Net5, TF1 Series Film, XEE, I Sydafrika Går Det Godt, TVN, Echappées belles, Hartz und Herzlich, RTL2, DR2, Kooth, Anonymous, TV Puls/Puls 2, Joe Network, Fox Network, Au nom de la vérité, In The Blood, Klimaets NYE Superstjerne, DRP2, Vodafone TV, BBT, RTE One, and the 2018 European Athletics Championships and many more!
I have also appeared several times on BBC Introducing and we have been told that our next single The Laws Of Life which is released on 21st March 2026 has been selected as a featured track on BBC Introducing and are currently awaiting to know what that means exactly. It is also a proud achievement to have worked with so many talented artists so far, I was also approached to remix Mark Morrison officially.”
What do you hope to achieve by releasing music with followers old and new?
L.P: “More people listening, the demand for more music and hopefully more money too!”
N.W: “I am hoping that those that have stuck around long enough to hear my progression are enjoying my newer works with Lois and will enjoy my collaboration with The Fods for the release of Kickback on 26th April 2026 on EscaVolt Records. I have taken control of my own releases with these songs so far between me and Lois after 9 albums released on Flipper Music so I am currently learning still a lot about marketing, promotion and design , I want to approach things differently then I did before with my previous releases as they were always more aimed towards music supervisors and placements then trying to get my name out there so to say. I also deleted my previous artist pages on social media which had a lot of a higher following but when I came back with my tail in between my legs and recreated another page I never got back the same followers. I am testing new methods but at the same time will never be one to put out constant dribble on social media, I do not want to have to come on the camera and tell people to listen to my music, so It’s all a learning curve and we truly hope to have the support of people around the world if they truly enjoy our work together. Of course the main goal here is to find our people out there that will enjoy listening to our work and have the songs strike something within them to want to listen to more in the future. We are also hoping to get out songs used in a visual project such as a film or tv show , we keep getting told that these songs would fit well in a James Bond film. I am trying to do things differently at this point in my career and we will see if what i am doing has results I guess at the end of my promotion runs.”
What are your plans for the upcoming year and what are some of your dreams for the future?
L.P: “This year it seems we’re going to get involved with BBC introducing, about to book a few local gigs in and around Norwich. Dreams for the future, make epic songs. Get them played on TV. James Bond pls. And just be walking in public and hear the song randomly. Or maybe a singular person being deeply touched or healed by the music – that would be more meaningful.”
N.W: “So for me its all systems go currently as I am self releasing our collaborations between me and Lois as well as me and The Fods each month on my newly formed record label , EscaVolt Records. We are aiming to start recording ideas for music videos for each song in the next coming months and have this completed next. Potential for live performances coming up as well as pushing the music in my own way to music supervisors and companies to try and get this music synched or placed in a project that will remain there forever more and generate royalties allowing us to continue making more music in the future. We have had our next song The Laws Of Life which is released on EscaVolt Records on 21st March 2026 selected as a featured track for BBC Introducing and are currently awaiting to hear what that means exactly, we have also been approached to feature in a large news publication next month. We have lots of reviews and interviews happening right now which is great to reach further and find more people interested in what it is I am doing along with the artists I work with. I am also in process of creating a sound effect and foley company called No Paw Audio and am working currently on the first 10 sound effect packs which will be available for purchase later in the year. I am working on lots of content also for my YouTube channels where I will be bringing all my hobbies into one space and connecting the dots so to say. I have a never ending list of things I am working through but can quite happily say I am very close, the closest I have ever been in my life to getting things set up the way I want them to be and working harder on my goals once the framework is in place. Most importantly I am about to be able to be creative fully again rather than just working in the back office and pushing things behind a screen, my soul needs creation to survive! 2026 is going to be a great year and a well earned one if it keeps going this way.”
How do you hope to achieve them and are there any specific things you are working on to make them come true?
L.P: “Keep making songs! Keep going with it. Hopefully it will spread and touch people.”
N.W: “Yes lots and lots! We are pushing our music further than I have ever before in the past, we are actively seeking reviews, interviews and news posts about our releases and work together , I being my own radio plugger and we are getting radio placements including currently over 100 + radio stations playing our songs and BBC Introducing also playing 3 of our 4 collaborations as well as selecting Laws of Life as featured track. I am working hard in the background on promotional materials , figuring out each step as I go where and how its best to promote music and posting stuff on social media more to build engagement. We are set to create our music videos for our singles too soon to give the music not only another push but to continue being able to tell a story with the music with our visual ideas, again I will be doing this all myself including the recording and editing. I am also as stated before creating my own music business and contact direct via my website http://www.nightwolfuk.com , I am also creating my sound effect and foley company No Paw Audio which will be live and official later this year with sound effect packs ready for purchase. I am also creating a better presence for my back catalog with some visual short videos I will be working on over the next coming months and have spent time to update and rebrand my image for socials etc. We would appreciate anyone who wants to follow along the journey joining us on our social pages mine is @NightWolfUK.”
What is, aside from music, something you would like your listeners and fans to know about you?
L.P: “I am not sure. I am quarter Jamaican. I am learning to oil paint. I love sea swimming. I want to learn to use a loop pedal.”
N.W: “I was once a budding professional wrestler who trained with Jake The Snake Roberts and have had full matches in an ex WWF ring! My back does not thank me for this period of my life when young and dumb. It is actually where my name originated from, not the mortal combat game 😉 I was called MC Wolf Base before it turned into Night Wolf and had my trousers set on fire once after a piledriver went wrong. I was picked by Jake to go to other schools and teach landing techniques, before he let his snake die and got into trouble and the school shut down. It was not my first wrestling school!”
Give us your best sales pitch; why should people go and listen to your music right now?
L.P: “Because you will enjoy it! Have you been prompted to reflect upon complex and true emotions through compelling sound and imagery. Or have you been consuming something dull and mind numbing, like your whining Instagram feed or the thing you do everyday that you hate. Treat yourself to some food for thought yummy.”
N.W: “I have been creating music for some time now and would be very happy to find people out there that enjoy to listen to original and some experimental forms of music , if you enjoy music with a darkness attached to it and moments of drama and atmosphere creeping through where you can make your own imagery of what Is happening to the music, then you might like what I am doing, there is a Hip Hop/Trip hop blessing and you never really know what you are going to get, it does not help that the titles of my previous albums are a little misleading if I am honest but again I did not have control over that before. So if you would like to watch someone find their own feet in the music industry and try and do things truly independently and enjoy our music and then please do follow along and come and listen to some older projects of mine too as you might be surprised what you find in my back catalogue. You can also see where the music is coming from before it gets placed in something special.
