Album: Black Opal – Divine Accusations

A twelve-track heavy rock album was released by Black Opal last month. Their latest stroke of genius is called ‘Divine Accusations’ and comes from a very good place. Twelve heavy thumping tracks are bound to make you a fan of Black Opal.

Strong vocals and a grand, riffing soundscape introduce us to the album and don’t leave us until its very last tones. The Belfast-based band fuse melodic riffs with distorted guitars and poignant lyrics, they do not beat around the bush. Combine that with dark and comforting bass lines and supporting drums rolls, and you’ve got a strong rock album that is inspiring and comforting.

“All men, all men are brothers, why can’t we just love one another?”

The band formed in 2022 and have created a strong and confident sound that shines brightly on songs such as ‘Giving In’, one of their heavier and faster paced tracks, and ‘Gotta Find a Way’, which reminded me of the energy of Foo Fighters and Queens Of The Stone Age. The album and its tracks offer an honest take on the group’s major influences while exploring themes of love, loss and aspects of the human condition. ‘Into The Light’ shows a lighter, almost indie rock influence, I very much appreciate at this point on the album. Potentially one of my favourites out of the twelve on ‘Divine Accusations’.

This collection of songs is truly a combination and blend of many different influences and genres, such as the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s rock, indie, and a dash of Britpop rear their heads on Black Opal’s blended sounds. ‘Catching the Butterfly’ hints most at a smoothly produced stadium rock track, ‘Feel Free’ rocks and rambles a tad more. ‘History’ is the albums closer, and makes for a beautifully fragile alternative rock track that demands us to slow down and live in this very moment. It also makes the album a very well-rounded project, thought-out and well-produced, I wholeheartedly recommend ‘Divine Accusations’.
