When we go to a indierock-gig we don’t expect the support-act to be a singer songwriter. With The Academic, you should always expect the unexpected. These youngsters from Mullingar, Ireland, have been touring venues and festivals through Ireland and Europa for the past few years. Last Sunday they blew the roof of Bitterzoet in Amsterdam. God, how they love Amsterdam, they’ve been telling us repeatedly… We get it though, Amsterdam is amazing. Pure indierock from teenagers that play tidyly like they have been playing arena’s all over the world. Their energetic performance ánd the enthusiastic audience they bring (teenage girls) gave the night a nice and sweaty atmosphere.
Sion Hill warmed up the hall before The Academic would kick off, with a solo set. The boys are from the same city and just recently met each other. What better way to officialize a friendship than touring together?! Sion’s voice sounds like one of an angel, and he knew how to involve the audience as well but for the slightly older people it was just annoying to be asked to sing along with the oh’s and ah’s. The girls in the front did know how to sing along though, as they did. We’re very curious what Sion sounds like wíth band, so we hope he’ll be back in the Netherlands any time soon… Or we might just cross the river for a gig?
